Joe Smith

About

I’m Dr Joseph Andrew Smith, Lecturer in Journalism with the University of Leicester. My main research focus is on the users of media, on how people engage with culture and the ways in which subject-text relationships inform constructions of identity. I have a special interest in fans and fandom, particularly older and long-term fans. I have worked mostly with sports and politics fans in my research, which can be broadly defined as belonging to the fields of communications, cultural and media studies, as well as cultural gerontology. Scroll down to find abstracts and links to my latest research, and use the tabs to read more about my career to date. Please also feel free to get in touch directly via joe.smith@leicester.ac.uk. I am a former sports media professional, and completed my PhD at the Centre for Participatory Culture, University of Huddersfield, under the supervision of Prof Cornel Sandvoss and Dr Benjamin Litherland. I have been an associate lecturer with the University of Huddersfield, Teaching Fellow in Media and Communication with the University of Leicester and Teaching Associate in Cultural, Media and Visual Studies with the University of Nottingham and Lecturer in Media with the University of Hertfordshire prior to moving to taking up my current role with Leicester.
